Frequently asked questions

Why use a field recorder instead of recording into my phone?

Three reasons: better preamps (Zoom, Tascam, and Sony recorders carry studio-grade input stages), redundancy (an SD card backup separate from your phone), and 32-bit float (some Zoom and Tascam models capture audio that can't clip). Phones are convenient but soft on input quality.

What's the difference between a Zoom H1, H4, and H6?

H1 is single-track stereo — interview, voice memo, music demo. H4 adds two XLR/TRS inputs for plugging in mics. H6 has four XLR inputs and interchangeable capsules. For most podcasters and YouTubers, an H4 or H1essential is plenty; for filmmakers and live music recording, H6 or H8.

Do field recorders need an audio interface?

No. Field recorders ARE the interface for portable use. Many can also act as USB audio interfaces when plugged into a computer (H6, H8, Tascam Portacapture series), so they double as a stationary studio rig.
