Frequently asked questions
How many keys should a beginner MIDI keyboard have?
25 mini keys is enough for melody sketching, pad triggering, and beat-making (Akai MPK Mini, Arturia MicroLab, Korg nanoKEY). 49 keys lets you play with both hands and is the comfortable home-studio default. 61 or 88 keys is for serious piano players and traditional keyboardists.
Are mini keys worth it for music production?
For beat-making, sampler triggering, and chord stamps — yes. They're compact, portable, and cheap. For piano-style playing and expressive performance, full-size keys are clearly better. Many producers own both.
Which MIDI keyboard works best with Ableton Live?
Novation Launchkey Mini / 25 / 37 / 49 / 61 MK4 are designed around Ableton with native mode mapping out of the box. Akai APC Key 25 and Arturia MiniLab also integrate well. Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol controllers map automatically into Komplete library plugins regardless of DAW.
Do I need an audio interface to use a MIDI keyboard?
No. MIDI keyboards send digital note data over USB; they don't generate sound on their own. Sound comes from software instruments inside your DAW. You only need an audio interface if you want to record voice, electric guitar, or hardware synthesizers alongside.
