Audio Interface Not Recognized by Computer — How to Fix It

Your audio interface is connected but not appearing in your computer's audio settings or recording software. Work through these steps to get it detected.

You might be experiencing this if…

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1

    Install the manufacturer's drivers first

Most audio interfaces — especially on Windows — require manufacturer-provided ASIO drivers to function correctly. Download the latest driver from the manufacturer's official website (Focusrite, PreSonus, Behringer, etc.) before connecting the interface. Install the driver, restart your computer, then connect the interface. Connecting before driver installation often creates a corrupted device entry that prevents later correct detection.

  2. 2

Try a different USB cable and port

Use the USB cable that came with the interface — third-party cables sometimes lack the data lines required for audio transfer. Connect directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a hub. Try multiple ports. On desktop computers, rear panel USB ports (connected directly to the motherboard) are more reliable than front panel ports.

    Pro tip

USB-C ports may require a specific cable or adapter. Use the cable shipped with the interface rather than a generic USB-C charging cable.

  3. 3

    Restart with the interface connected

Disconnect the interface, shut down the computer completely, reconnect the interface, then power on. Some interfaces are only properly detected during the boot sequence. This is particularly common with older interfaces on Windows.

  4. 4

Check Windows Device Manager for errors

Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager). Expand 'Sound, video and game controllers'. If your interface shows a yellow exclamation mark, right-click and choose 'Update driver' then 'Search automatically'. If it shows 'Unknown device' in Universal Serial Bus controllers, the driver installation did not complete — reinstall the driver.

  5. 5

Set the interface as the default audio device

Even after successful detection, the interface may not become the active audio device. On Mac: System Settings → Sound, select the interface under both Input and Output. On Windows: right-click the speaker icon → Sound Settings, select the interface as the default input and output device. In your DAW, go to Audio Settings and select the interface's ASIO driver.

  6. 6

    Disable conflicting audio software

Realtek Audio Manager, IDT Audio, Nahimic, and Dolby Atmos software can conflict with audio interface drivers. Disable or uninstall these programs. On Windows, go to Apps and uninstall any audio enhancement software that is not the interface's own driver.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Focusrite Scarlett not show up on Windows?

Install Focusrite Control software first from the Focusrite website before connecting the interface. If already installed, open Device Manager and check for a yellow warning flag on the device. Reinstall the Focusrite ASIO driver. Try a different USB cable and a rear USB port on a desktop PC.

My interface works on Mac but not Windows — why?

Mac uses Core Audio, which has built-in support for many USB audio interfaces with no extra drivers. Windows requires ASIO drivers that must be installed separately. Download and install the manufacturer's Windows ASIO driver. If the interface is very old, the manufacturer may have stopped providing Windows 11 drivers — check the support page.

Interface recognized but no sound — what is wrong?

The interface is detected but not set as the default device, or the sample rate in the DAW does not match the interface's current rate. Set the interface as the default input and output device in system sound settings. In your DAW, ensure the audio device is set to the interface and the sample rate matches (usually 44.1 or 48 kHz).
