📖 Audio Glossary

Golden Ear

A person with exceptional listening skills — able to discern subtle differences in audio quality through trained critical listening.

The term 'golden ear' is partly myth and partly real. Critical listening is a trained skill, not an innate talent. Anyone can learn to identify frequency ranges, compression artifacts, phase issues, and reverb characteristics through practice. What separates experienced engineers is not better hearing but better listening habits — knowing what to listen for.

Golden ear training: use sweepable sine waves to learn frequency recognition, practice identifying EQ changes of ±1 dB, A/B test compression settings, and reference your mixes against commercial releases regularly.
