📖 Audio Glossary

Acoustics

The science of how sound is produced, transmitted, and received — in audio, it refers to how a room's characteristics affect what you hear.

Room acoustics determine how sound waves reflect, absorb, and resonate within a space. Poor acoustics cause uneven bass, muddy midrange, and flutter echo — making accurate mixing impossible. The three main acoustic problems in home studios: room modes (standing waves), early reflections, and excessive reverb time.

Basic acoustic treatment — bass traps in corners and absorption panels at first reflection points — costs $100–200 and makes a bigger difference than any equipment upgrade. For critical listening, room acoustics matter more than the speakers.
