The MOTU M2 and M4 are widely regarded as having the best audio quality and the best metering of any interface near their price. They share the same ESS Sabre32 converters used in gear costing far more, the same full-color LCD metering, and the same ultra-low latency. The difference is purely about I/O count.

The difference: 2 vs 4 channels

The M2 has two combo mic/line/instrument inputs and two outputs. The M4 doubles the I/O to four in and four out, adding two TRS line inputs (great for synths, drum machines, or a second stereo source) and a second stereo output pair for routing to a separate headphone amp or monitor controller.

  • MOTU M2: two combo inputs — perfect for a vocalist plus a guitar, or two mics.
  • MOTU M4: four inputs including two dedicated line inputs for hardware synths and outboard gear.

Identical sound and metering

Both deliver the same class-leading dynamic range and the same gorgeous LCD that shows real input/output levels at a glance — a genuine advantage over the blinking single LEDs on rivals. If you have ever clipped a take without knowing, the MOTU metering alone is worth it.

Which to choose

  • Buy the M2 if: you record one or two sources and want flawless converters in the smallest box.
  • Buy the M4 if: you have synths, a drum machine, or outboard gear to connect, or want a second output pair.
